New aqua exercise class in Berrigan

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) will be offering aqua classes in Berrigan from Friday 8 December in a partnership with Staying Active.

Local resident Beth Bashford Paul recently trained in aqua exercise and is now a registered volunteer with MLHD’s Physical Activity Leaders Network. “Exercising in water offers many physical and mental health benefits and is a good choice for people with a chronic disease and those with a high risk of developing a chronic disease,” said Beth. “Water aerobics provides a cardiovascular and a light resistance workout. Cardiovascular exercise is especially important for seniors because it directly reduces the participants' risk for circulatory problems such as heart disease.

“Resistance workouts help to maintain strength and stability in the muscles, which can go a long way toward preserving the balance, range of motion and mobility that seniors often begin to lose,” she said. Water aerobics protects the joints as the buoyancy supports a portion of the body weight, reducing the load on joints during movement.

The program aims to improve access to safe physical activity, especially for older adults living in rural communities. MLHD Health Promotion Officer Stephen Burton said: “We know the importance of regular physical activity to maintain good health and this is a great chance for community members to take part in a low cost and fun exercise program offered locally.”

The Aqua exercise classes will be held at Berrigan Swimming Pool at 6pm on Fridays from 8 December at a cost of $2 per session.

For more information about the classes please contact Beth Bashford on 0427 852 276.
