Fabric of Life Book Launch a success

The Fabric of Life book launch a great success

Over seventy people gathered at the Berrigan Library on Tuesday to witness the launch of Mary Dowling's book called "The Fabric of Life": a collection of poems and prose.

Mary Dowling was a long time resident in our Shire and many friends and family were in attendance to help celebrate the occasion. Mayor Cr Bernard Curtin OAM introduced Mary who was then able to provide some background on her life and reasons for writing the book, including thanking Olivia, her granddaughter, for her assistance in preparing the book and her grandson, Hamish for his illustrations.

Many people took the opportunity to purchase a signed copy. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Brain Cancer Research.

Copies are available at the Berrigan Library for $10.00.

Barooga Library 10th birthday celebrations

Today Wednesday 11th March 2015, Barooga Library celebrated 10 years with a special birthday cake.

Approximately 40 participants were treated to morning tea and scrumptious chocolate cake to mark the occasion. Mayor Bernard Curtin expressed his pride in Council’s achievements and disappointment regarding the funding of libraries from State Government. The Legislation states there must be an equal responsibility from State and Local Government when it comes to funding libraries but the cost has shifted enormously over the years with Local Government now paying 97% of library funding.

Cr. John Bruce shared his delight in having opened Barooga Library ten years ago, as well as, Berrigan and Tocumwal when he was Mayor. He expressed how well the Barooga Library blended into it’s environment, looks as good as the day it was built, and noted that the strong design withstood the tornado force of 2012.

Displays of the old and new library were pinned around the room, sparking chats of reminiscence, but pride in progress.

Mayor, Bernard praised library staff for their dedication and quality customer service.

International Women's Day Literary lunch another great success

On Sunday 8th March women from all over our shire gathered for the annual International Women’s Day Literary lunch at Berrigan Sportsground. The lunch was catered by the Berrigan Netball Club and the young netball players were fantastic attending on the tables.  The food was delicious and after consuming the beautiful desserts, Marg Carroll entertained everyone with an outline of how she came to writing and talked of the people she met along her journey.  She is the author of three non-fiction books that give accounts of the lives of amazing Australians she has met in her travels.

Her books are Ordinary People, Extroadinary Lives, Reinventing the Bush and The Man who loved Crocodiles.  These books are all available at your library
