Roads and Maintenance

Berrigan Shire Council maintains a significant network of roads throughout the Shire. These roads are largely defined as regional main roads and provide most of the strategic arterial road transport links with centres outside the Shire.

Many of these roads are sealed, however a number of roads within the Shire are only partially sealed or are graded gravel or dry weather only.

Council priorities have been to protect and maintain the existing road network in good condition with the financial resources available. This involves an extensive program of grading, heavy patching, resheeting and resealing.

With limited financial resources and the cost of maintaining the road network increasing every year, it is becoming more difficult to maintain and improve the standards of the roads within the Shire.

Berrigan Shire Council regards the Shire roads as long term assets and has developed management strategies to use the available resources in the most efficient manner when planning maintenance needs. The Council gathers statistics on current road usage to provide information for decision making on road infrastructure, such as crossings, signs and devices for controlling traffic in the most efficient and safe manner.

Council welcomes input and feedback from residents and ratepayers regarding the road system within the Berrigan Shire.
