Important News Regarding Town Water Supply in Barooga and Tocumwal

Berrigan Shire Council will be providing optimally fluoridated water to the communities of Barooga and Tocumwal from 15 September 2009, in line with recommended NSW Health policy and existing practice in Berrigan and Finley.
It is recommended that you seek your own advice from your dentist in relation to fluoride supplements as their use is not generally necessary where fluoridated water is available.
Further information on fluoridation is available from the Australian Dental Association website:

Be Water Wise & Conserve Our Water Resources

Water is one of our most precious resources. You can help the environment by reducing your water consumption by following these helpful tips;

Indoors

  • Ensure taps are turned off tightly and replace worn washers
  • Look for appliances which reduce water use
  • Adjust the fill level on your washing machine to match the load size
  • Always wait until you have a full load in your washing machine and dishwasher
  • Use plugs in sinks and baths
  • Turn the tap off while you brush your teeth
  • Check for leaks by turning off all taps and cisterns then checking your meter - if your meter is reading changes you may have a leak somewhere on your property
  • Install a water saving shower head
  • For a soak, take a bath instead of a shower
  • Install a dual flush toilet

Outdoors

  • Hand watering your garden, drip watering and microspray systems can use less water than many old fixed sprinklers
  • Timers attached to your taps can help prevent over watering and unnecessary water wasting
  • Sweep paved and sealed areas instead of hosing, ...this can save 100 litres every 5 minutes

Did you know...

  • When you take a shower, it uses 10 to 20 litres of water a minute
  • A dripping tap can waste 200 litres of water each day
  • You can significantly reduce the amount of water used in your toilet cistern by either installing a water saving device, or by putting a few sealed plastic drink bottles full of water in the cistern

The average amount of water used

  • Flush Toilet (full flush) = 12 litres
  • Bath = 100 Litres
  • Have a long Shower = 200 litres
  • Brushing teeth with tap running = 5 litres
  • Fill the Hand basin = 5 litres
  • Dishwasher = 50 litres/load
  • Washing Machine = 150 litres/load
  • Sprinkler = 1000 litres/hour
  • Car Washing (with hose) = 200 litres
  • Hosing Driveway = 100 litres
  • Dripping Tap = 200-600 litres/day

The average person uses 10 litres of water per person each day drinking, cooking and cleaning

Note: 1,000 litres = 1 kilolitre (KL)

The Berrigan Shire Council has formulated water saving policy’s to assist residents in the responsible use of water resources and prevent water waste and misuse.
