Bushfire Risk Management Plan Review

The Corowa Berrigan Bushfire Risk Management Plan is currently being prepared for the Corowa and Berrigan Shires.

The Bushfire Risk Management Plan (BRMP) is the overriding document that sets the strategies for fire prevention and treatment in each local area. It is a legislative requirement for each committee area to produce and review each five years. The purpose of the plan is to protect life, economic assets and our natural and cultural heritage. The Corowa Berrigan Bush Fire Risk Management Plan ultimately determines such things as which areas require special fire protection, which areas are targeted for community education, where hazard reductions are conducted and who is responsible.

The Corowa Berrigan Bush Fire Management Committee (BFMC) will seek community input in order to review and rewrite the new BRMP over the next few months. The knowledge and opinions of local people about bushfires will form the cornerstone of the new plan.

Bush fire management was formerly based solely on fuel reduction and responding to fires when they occurred. This has changed. Greater emphasis is now placed on risk management, mitigation and community preparation to complement fuel management practices.

The BFMC wants to know:

• What significant places, buildings, environments you think are at risk from bush fires
• What bush fire treatment strategy should be in place for those assets
• Your knowledge and experience of fire history and fire paths
• Your bush fire management issues and concerns
