Barooga Recreation Reserve - DRAFT Masterplan 

Yonder Landscape Architecture have been engaged by Berrigan Shire Council (BSC) to work with the community to prepare a Master Plan for Barooga Recreation Reserve. The Master Plan is an aspirational and strategic plan which aims to guide future funding applications and on-ground works.
The Master Plan will provide a framework for the staged redevelopment of the Reserve’s facilities, upgrade of existing facilities, investment in new facilities and services and supports strategic linkages between the Barooga Recreation Reserve and the sports facilities operated by the Barooga
Sporties Group.

The Berrigan Shire Council has numerous parks available for your entertainment and relaxation

If you are interested in holding an event in one of the parks or gardens please see the Events on Council Land webpage, and read through the Event Management Guide, a guide for organisers, and complete the Event Checklist.  The Event Checklist is a preliminary checklist to determine what further action is required regarding the holding of events.  Each event is unique, and whilst some events do not require Council approval, others require permits and the completion of several documents.  The following checklist is to be used as a guide only in relation to what further information may need to be obtained.

Listed below are most of the parks within the Shire and what they offer.


Parks and Gardens in Barooga:

Barooga Community Botanical Gardens

Barooga Community Botanical Gardens are situated in the main street of Barooga and were established in 1992. The local Community raised all the funds to establish the gardens.  The pleasant surroundings of the gardens lend themselves to weddings and social functions. The gardens have a children's playground and free barbecue facilities.


Weddings and Celebrations

The gardens have proved to be a popular venue to hold wedding ceremonies and celebrations.  These events are to be registered with the Gardens Secretary.  Fill out the forms available on their website.

Library Park

The Barooga Library Park is situated next to the library, on Golf Course Road (last left before you start travelling towards Cobram). The park has a new children’s playground and facilities for relaxing. It is in a great location with the ability to be able to borrow books then go to the relaxing area in the park. Children can be entertained inside the building and out on the playground.

Barooga Adventure Playground

The wonderful Adventure Playground is now open in Barooga, adjacent to the Library on Golf Course Road.  This playground features

  • Kinder house play unit

The Barooga Splashpad, located in the Adventure Playground is open from 10am to 8pm daily, regardless of the weather, from October to April (and possibly longer dependent on demand).  There may be times when the facilities will be shut down for maintenance.

It has a button to activate the water as well as a separate hand pump to operate the irrigation system.

Parks and Gardens in Berrigan:

Apex Park

Apex Park is located behind the main shopping precinct, Chanter Street, on the corner of Cobram Street and Davis Street.  There is access by foot from the main street between the Pharmacy and the CWA Hall.  A toilet block is located there and the Shire has just replaced the playground.

Hayes Park

Hayes Park is situated 500m south of the Post Office in Berrigan and features the local skate board rink and town swimming pool. 

This pleasant and shady park is also home to the Berrigan Caravan Park and is close to shops, and the local hospital. Public Toilets and BBQ facilities available.

Parks and Gardens in Finley:

Memorial Park

The Finley Memorial Park is located on the Berrigan Road. This park was dedicated in memory of the local soldiers who lost their lives in the first and second world wars.

The ANZAC Day memorial service is held in this location each year.

The park also has a children’s playground.

Mary Lawson Way Side Rest

The Mary Lawson is located on the Newell Highway. It surrounds the water hole, but please beware that it is very deep and can be dangerous.

The Mary Lawson is the perfect rest stop after a long trip. It is also perfectly located next to the Finley Museum and Log Cabin, which is open most days or by appointment.

Go to the museum and see the replica’s and have a walk through the McAllister Homestead, and the original Myrtle Park School which was build in 1896.

Skate Park & Canoe Tree

The Finley Skate Park is situated on Denison Street Finley. The park offers youth the ability to have a go on the skating facilities and play on the swings. You can get into the skate park from the Newell Highway by walking through the Rotary Park. Along the way have a look at the Aboriginal artwork, including the Canoe Tree.

Diggers Park

Diggers Park is located on the corner of Dawe Avenue and Donaldson Street. It is situated next to the Finley Hospital and is great to get away to a quiet area. Please be aware that there no longer a children’s play equipment there however there is quite a large area with many shady trees and benches.

Parks and Gardens in Tocumwal:

Foreshore Park

The Tocumwal Foreshore Park is located along the river foreshore on Deniliquin Road and Anzac Avenue. There is playground equipment, numerous seats and tables with magnificent views of the Murray River. The boat ramp is located next to the park. The Foreshore Park has many bakeries, cafes and small shops just across the road. You can also hire bikes and canoes and travel along the bike tracks.

The Foreshore Park is the location of the Big Murray Cod (fish), and taking a photo of it to add to the collection is a must.

It is also the location of the Tocumwal Foreshore Market which is held once a month. For more details on the market please contact Tocumwal Visitors Information Centre on (03) 5874 2517.

Tocumwal Splashpark

The Tocumwal Splashpark is located on the foreshore at Anzac Avenue Tocumwal and is open from 9am to 9pm daily, regardless of the weather, from October to April (and possibly longer dependent on demand).  There may be times when the facilities will be shut down for maintenance.

Tocumwal was home to the largest RAAF base in the southern hemisphere during WWII, and this history influenced the style of the splash park with features including a giant custom made airplane (B24) dumper bucket, a cockpit, water cannons, ground sprays, windsock and propeller showers, and spray bomb features, shadesales and in-ground LED lighting.

Irrigation is also significant to Berrigan Shire, and is recognised via a mini irrigation circuit, complete with a rock carved creek feature and retaining wall featuring fully interactive sluice gates, leading down to the splash park.

In order to activate the Splashpark activities any one of three buttons must be pressed. These are located around the pad and turn the water on for a period of time. When the water shuts off it can be turned on immediately at any one of the three buttons if there is still demand.

Adjacent is a fully solar powered amenities block (off the grid), with 6 unisex toilets, 1 unisex disabled access toilet, shower, baby change room and storage room. 

Apex Park

The Apex Park is the location of the Tocumwal Skate Park and barbeque facilities. It is situated on Deniliquin Street between Berrigan Street and Barker Street. This park is very youth friendly but please remember your safety equipment if you are using the skating facilities.

Library Park

The Library Park is located next to the Tocumwal Library in the main street (Deniliquin Road). This park has a children’s playground, seats and is a very relaxing area. Feel free to enter the gate and let your young play.

Alcohol Free Zones

For the safety of all residents and visitors, parks and gardens within the Berrigan Shire are alcohol free areas unless a permit has been obtained from Council prior to a social event.
