Bendigo Bank Berrigan Agency to Close in October 2025
Berrigan Shire Council wishes to inform the community that the Bendigo Bank Agency located at 56 Chanter Street, Berrigan, will permanently close at 2:00pm on Thursday 23 October 2025.
The decision to cease agency operations was made by Bendigo Bank, who have advised Council that evolving customer preferences, reduced in-person banking activity, and increasing compliance costs have made the current agency model unsustainable.
The Berrigan Agency has proudly served the local community since 2017 under a formal agreement between Berrigan Shire Council and Bendigo Bank. While the decision to close the agency was not made by Council, we understand this change may impact residents and will work to ensure the community is kept well-informed and supported during the transition.
Bendigo Bank customers can continue to access services via the following options:
- In-person banking: Community Bank Coleambally (open Monday to Friday, 9:30am–4:00pm)
- Bank@Post services: Available at the Berrigan Post Office for everyday transactions
- Digital banking: Online, app, and phone banking available 24/7
- Fee waiver: Basic transaction fees will be waived at both Coleambally and Berrigan LPO for 12 months from the closure date
Bendigo Bank representatives will also visit the Berrigan Agency site prior to closure to assist with customer enquiries.
“We’re proud of the local service the Berrigan Agency has provided over the past eight years. Taking on the agency was a decision made by Council not because it is our core work but because it filled a need in our community. Berrigan Shire Council is disappointed by the decision taken by the bank to cease its agency operations. Decisions such as this disproportionately impact on small communities such as ours who have borne the brunt of bank closures for years. This is another example of inequitable access to services for those in Rural, Regional and Remote Australia. We will continue to fight for equity, however, in the meantime, we will focus on helping residents navigate the transition with clear communication and support,” said Mayor Julia Cornwell McKean.
Council thanks the local community for their support of the agency and will continue to work closely with Bendigo Bank and the Coleambally Finance Group to ensure a smooth wind-down process.
