Liquid Trade Waste
Liquid trade waste (LTW) describes all liquid waste other than sewerage discharged to the sewer, including but not limited to:
- commercial premises such as beauticians, hairdresser, florist, hotel, motel, restaurant, butcher, petrol/service station, supermarket, dentist
- public or community premises such as school, college, hospital, nursing home, TAFE college
- industrial premises
- trade activities such as mobile carpet cleaner
- any commercial operations carried out at residential premises
- saleyards, racecourses, kennels and stables
LTW can be a problem because our sewerage system is designed for domestic sewage.
By contrast, trade waste is generated by businesses or commercial activities and may be quite different to domestic sewage.

Any business discharging trade waste to sewer, either directly or indirectly (tankered) must have Council approval to do so. Either the property owner or the tenant (with owner consent) can apply.
I need to discharge liquid trade waste
If you wish to discharge liquid trade waste in to the sewerage system you must, under section 68 of the Local Government Act 1993, obtain prior approval from Council, as detailed in Council's Liquid Trade Waste Policy(PDF, 1MB). Discharging liquid trade waste without an approval is an offence under section 626 of the Act.
To obtain approval the person responsible for discharging the waste must complete and lodge the Liquid Trade Waste application and lodge this with Council along with the applicable fees.
