Pet Microchipping & Registration

Pets and Animals

Getting your pet microchipped and registered is part of being a responsible pet owner and can help reunite you with your furry friends if they go missing. If your dog is picked up from the Pound, it will be microchipped and registered including working dogs (at a fee of $0).

Microchipping

Microchipping is compulsory in NSW. All cats and dogs are required to be microchipped prior to being registered.

Animals are to be microchipped by 12 weeks of age, at a point of sale or change of ownership (whichever occurs first).

Microchipping is carried out by a vet and is painless. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is usually implanted between the shoulders of the animal.

Microchipping enables vets and other animal workers to reunite pets with their owners. The microchip can be scanned to reveal all of the owners information supplied at the time of microchipping.

If you are organising your pet's microchipping, you will be required to complete a permanent identification form, as found below. This will link all your information to the companion animals data base.

Registration

All cats and dogs, other than exempt cats and dogs, must be registered by six months of age otherwise penalties can apply. In NSW the registration fee is a once-only payment, which covers your cat or dog for its lifetime, regardless of any changes in ownership. If you think your pet is exempt from registration, you must have proof for the reason why it is exempt, eg. working dogs.

Discounted registration fees apply to desexed cats or dogs.

Registration can be completed online, at any Berrigan Shire Library or at any NSW local Council. Please find the lifetime registration form below. Registration fees apply.

If you’ve got questions about the costs or the process, head to the NSW Office of Local Government’s Pet Registry page here. Or contact Council's Ranger on 03 5888 5100

Changing details

It is important you keep the registration details up-to-date should you move house, change contact details, sell or give away your pet. It is an offence to not notify Council of changes in ownership details.

It is recommended you create an owner profile with the NSW Pet Registry. The register allows you to:

  • update your contact details
  • report your pet missing
  • change the ownership of pets online

You can do this online, or via the change of details form below.

If you need to verify an existing microchip, you'll find the relevant form via the Pet Registry here.

If you can't register online via the animal registry, the below forms are available for registration, microchipping ID registration and change of details. You can then lodge these at any of our customer service centres.
