Berrigan Shire Council has received funding from the NSW State Government to conduct a Flood Risk Management Study and Plan (FRMS&P) for each of the townships and surrounds of Tocumwal and Barooga. The purpose of this study is to evaluate practical and feasible flood risk management options, both due to riverine flooding (from the Murray River), as well as overland flooding from local storms.

This study will improve Council’s understanding of flood behaviour and impacts to better inform flood risk management, emergency planning, and land use decisionmaking in Tocumwal and Barooga. Up to date models will be used to test and recommend various flood mitigation options, such as levee upgrades and improvements to drainage infrastructure.

Community members are encouraged to participate in the study by sharing your experiences of flooding, highlighting flooding hot spots and problem areas, and making suggestions for improvements that we can investigate in this study.

Council is currently undertaking the Data Collection and Review stage. Council’s consultant WMS Engineering will gather and review all available information and past reports, review modelling tools, and seek input from the community about potential flood risk mitigation options to investigate in Stage 2.

The community drop-in session and questionnaire provide an opportunity to share your experience of flooding and overland flow in Tocumwal and Barooga, highlight problem areas you are aware of, and suggest ways to reduce flood risk in these towns. Consultants will investigate suggestions received by the community, and provide recommendations for Council to implement in the future.
