FRESH START FOR A LOCAL INSTITUTION

Seven local businesses will receive support through Council’s Small Business Grants Program, with funding set to drive business growth, enhance services and create more vibrant community spaces across the Shire. The program delivers targeted assistance to help local enterprises expand their operations, boost efficiency and generate broader benefits for residents, visitors and industry.

Mayor Julia Cornwell McKean said the grants reflect Council’s commitment to strengthening the local economy while supporting community wellbeing.

“These grants are an investment in the future of our local economy. They’re helping businesses grow, improve their services and, importantly, create spaces and opportunities that benefit our whole community.”

The funded projects represent a wide cross-section of local industries, including tourism, agriculture, trades, health and community services.

In Tocumwal, the Tocumwal Ice Creamery will upgrade its outdoor garden and deck area, creating a more welcoming and accessible space for families, community groups and visitors to enjoy the riverfront. “This project will make our outdoor area more comfortable and inviting for everyone, whether they’re customers, locals or just passing through,” the business owners said.

Other recipients are focusing on improving efficiency and expanding service capacity. Thorburn Drone Solutions will invest in new equipment to deliver faster, more responsive agricultural services for local farmers, particularly during time‑critical seasonal periods. Border Backhoe will be purchasing additional equipment to improve responsiveness and reduce downtime, enabling the business to support more clients across the region.

Several businesses are using the grants to support growth and expansion. Fussy As Cleaning Services and EMpower T&C will invest in commercial equipment and training resources to increase capacity and meet rising demand.

The Sunrise Motel is set to transform its roadside frontage into a vibrant rotating mural space for local artists, contributing to placemaking and strengthening local identity. Whilst, new business, Regional Entitlement Support Services (RESS), will use the funding to establish advocacy and support services for residents across the Shire, including those in more remote areas.

Mayor Julia said the diversity of projects highlights the importance of supporting businesses at every stage of development. “From start‑ups to long‑established operators, these grants are helping businesses innovate, grow and deliver real benefits back to the community,” she said. “It’s about building a stronger, more vibrant and more resilient local economy.”

Council acknowledges all applicants and congratulates the successful recipients.

About the Small Business Grants Program

The Berrigan Shire Council Small Business Grant Program is a relatively new initiative, providing a total funding pool of $40,000 delivered across two rounds each financial year. The program is designed to support specific business goals or projects that contribute to growth, innovation and long‑term sustainability.

Grants may be used for a range of purposes, including:

  • supporting business start‑ups through implementation of key elements of a business plan (excluding general overheads such as computers, insurance or rent)
  • facilitating business expansion through marketing
  • encouraging innovation and the adoption of new technologies
  • investing in staff education and skills development
  • supporting job creation and increased service capacity.

To be eligible, applicants must operate and be registered within the Berrigan Shire Council area, employ fewer than 10 full‑time equivalent staff, and have an annual turnover of less than $5 million. Applicants must also agree to participate in Council promotional activities.

Applications are assessed on the merit of the proposal, alignment with program objectives, and the quality of the supporting budget and quotes. Preference is given to projects where applicants contribute matching funds or greater—for example, a $5,000 project supported by a $2,500 grant request.
