January Mayor's Message

Cr. Julia Cornwell-McKean

It has certainly been wonderful as we have welcomed 2024 to see increased visitor numbers.  It has been a difficult number of years for our tourism and hospitality businesses with impacts from bushfires, COVID and then floods so it is great to see so many campers, visitors and day trippers having a great time in the shire.

This month Council released the first eight videos from the 'a new adventure awaits' series promoting tourism to our region.  Some of you may have seen the videos which are featuring on social media and prime time television, including during the cricket and tennis.  Further videos will be released throughout the year to keep the momentum going.

Berrigan Shire will once again be catching national attention in January and February with two televised sporting events - the Webex Players Series Murray River 2024 at Cobram Barooga Golf Club and the Cobram Barooga Classic, part of the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour, at Thompson’s Beach.  I never fail to be marvelled by the people who tell me that they have seen these events on television and have subsequently decided to come for a visit.

With a new year, also comes a new calendar.  The Berrigan Shire Photo Calendar includes the winning photos from our annual photography competition.  I must say that the photos are more impressive every year.  Calendars are available for purchase from our libraries and the Council office for just $5.

Berrigan will be the host of Council’s Australia Day event this year.  I urge you all to come and celebrate the achievements of the nominated individuals and groups and to welcome our newest Australian citizens.  The CWA in Berrigan are hosting a breakfast from 7:30AM ($20 per head) and official proceedings will begin at 9:30AM.

Finally, while I have spoken a lot about holidays and visitors this month, I particularly want to recognise Council staff who worked through or were on call over the seasonal break.  We appreciate the time you have taken away from your friends and families and want you to know that this is not taken for granted.  Thank you.

Happy New Year!

Dr Julia Cornwell McKean
